The new normal-just the same as before

Hey guys Rosie here! I just wanted to say that for the first time in almost 3 months mom went to work and left us alone for the day. At first it was kind of scary and I didn’t want her to leave. She has been taking such good care of me, and if she couldn’t be here, she made sure someone else was.

Well after she left I had to go potty and she wasn’t here to open the door for me so I figured out how to get out of the dog door all by myself!   It was pretty cool because mom has only let me in the yard for like 10 minutes at a time. But today I got to lay in the driveway and take a nap with the sun shining on my belly! Pretty cool! When I got tired I went back in the house just like that ! EZPZ right through my dog door.

My friend came to walk me today and I made him run really fast. When we got home he was dripping sweat and breathing really hard. I just kissed him and wagged my tail some.

On Wednesday mom tells me that I get to go to the treadmill and go swimming. It’s one of my favorite things to do, especially the peanut butter.

All in all, life is pretty good. Guess I’ll let mom know that I can get outside and back in all by myself. She’s pretty tired and I bet she would like to be able to rest some. But I can’t wait until summer when we can go swimming all day long.  Being a tripawd dog is pretty cool, especially because I’m not in any pain!

Three paws up! Rosie

My crazy story!

img_2050I am a crazy, happy and loving seven-year-old golden retriever. My name is Rosie! I’m so glad that my mom found this great community because it’s really helped her to help me.

Starting last spring every time I went to the park I’d start limping a little bit when I got home. Finally it started to get really bad and my mom took me to the vet in May. The vet said I’d been eating too many cookies and needed to lose some weight. They also took a bunch of x-rays and said I had some arthritis. My right rear stifle (knee) was a little too wobbly and Dr KP said I needed to rest or may need an operation to fix it. I lost 12 pounds and am the perfect weight now. I hate diets! I still get cookies, but not as many.

So we didn’t get to run and chase balls as much as we normally do and only got to go swimming a few times. By the end of summer I couldn’t put any weight on my back leg.

So I went to a really nice doctor and he did a TPLO surgery on my leg. I have lots of really cool screws and plates in my leg now. My mom calls me bionic Rosie! I was only supposed to be in recovery for eight weeks and if I did physical therapy and got to swim in the water treadmill they said that I’d be better than ever four to six weeks after my surgery. I loved the treadmill! They would put a bowl with peanut butter and kibble in it and I got to eat it the whole time I was in the treadmill. Then they gave me a massage and we got to do some fun exercises. Unfortunately, I didn’t improve, I just got worse.

My mom was so worried about me and I really tried to not show her how much I hurt. But one day the doctor looked at my leg and touched it in such a way that I almost bit her. I would never bite anybody but it hurts so much! The doctor mentioned 0SA but my mom didn’t know what that was. We went home and by the next week I couldnt move and I wouldn’t eat. My mom was so scared she took me to the vet again. They took some more x-rays of my leg and my pretty bones looked like they had cotton balls all over them. The vet said that it was cancer, osteosarcoma. The vet also took pictures of my lungs, and lucky for me, there is no cancer there. My mom took me back to the surgeon the next day and he said he wanted to cut my leg off. My mom kind of freaked out a lot and didn’t want to hurt me anymore.

All I know is that I was in so much pain, I didn’t want to eat and I couldn’t even wag my tail or smile. My mom found this great site called Tripawds.com and very quickly decided that this was a really cool club and that we should join. I have no idea what she meant, but I always trust her and I know that she does the very best for me.

So five days after finding out that I had something called cancer I went to the doctor and they took my pain away. I got to spend the night at the hospital and they fed me really good food and scratched my tummy and rubbed my belly. The next day my mom and my sister came to pick me up and take me home. I was so happy to see them that I was smiling and my tail was wagging, and my ears were flopping up and down as I hopped down the hallway to say hi!

They gave me so much medicine that I was seeing pink elephants fly. But I was so happy to be home with my pack leader, Braden and on my own bed. I could walk really fast, because I hadn’t been using that leg in anyway, and I felt a lot better. After surgery, I just wanted to sleep and get better. But the next day when I went out to go potty, I was so happy to be in my own yard I ran around like crazy. My mom says I overdid it. And for the next few days, I didn’t even feel like eating. I guess I need to listen to mom.

Two weeks after my surgery, I got the staples out. Oh my God! Do I feel great. I rock it on three legs just like as if I’ve been born that way. I don’t hurt anymore. I smile all the time I love to go on walks, and I love to play tug-of-war with my brother Braden. My mom is still spoiling me, which is really cool. She seems so happy, and has been giving me tons of scratches and belly rubs and extra cuddles. Life is good. Actually my life is great!

I have to go to the doctor a lot still, but I like them. They are all really nice to me and give me lots of good treats. I don’t even mind that they poked me sometimes and give me medicine. My mom says that this medicine is going to Help me so that we can go swimming every summer and hiking every fall and spring, for many many years to come. I love my mom!

PS- Life on three legs is awesome. I’m one tough dog, and cancer has no place in my life. Bye-bye cancer!
